How to Help Students Find the Right Career
3 Minutes Can Make a Difference For Today’s Generation
Remember when you were a student? Some of you might have been fortunate, knowing exactly what you wanted to do with your life and how to get there. But for the vast majority of us, the career navigation process was daunting, filled with uncertainty, stress, and unanswered questions. Some wove their way through this confusing landscape and eventually came out with a good fit career, but again, for many, the resulting career wasn’t the most satisfying one out there.
So why does this happen? The biggest problem is that high school students lack information. They may only have one guidance counselor for every 300 students in their high school. Despite their counselor’s best intentions, he or she just won’t be able to provide every student with totally individualized attention. Or they may be the first in their family to consider going to college, so it’s hard for them to rely on their personal network for career and educational advice. Lots of students know at least vaguely what it means to be a doctor, lawyer, or teacher – but there are a lot of jobs out there that aren’t as obvious or easy to understand. What about less common jobs that might be a fit if the student only knew about them? Careers within fields like graphic design, accounting, digital marketing, or entrepreneurship?
The thing is, we bet many of you actually hold jobs that aren’t easily defined or known to students. And that’s the key to how you can help today’s generation. We believe knowledge is power, and the job search process is no exception to that rule. One of the best ways you can help a student learn more about your job is to agree to do an information interview with them. This is a conversation in which you describe what it is you do at work, how you got to your current position and company, and what you wished you had known when you first started working. It gives the student the opportunity to ask candid questions about your company and career path without committing you to promising them a job.
Of course, the trouble with informational interviews is two-fold. First, how do you find students in need and how do they find you? And second, wouldn’t it be great if you could help hundreds of students rather than just one at a time? That’s where online videos come in.
