Understanding Spinning and Stationary Bikes
Imagine heading into your fitness center and encountering the following: a line of stationary bikes filled with people who are pedaling like mad. The lights in the room have been dimmed considerably and music pumps through the entire space. The instructor calls out to the class that they are heading “into the hills” and a noticeable change comes over the faces of those participating in the routine. This is due to the fact that their stationary bikes have been programmed to increase the resistance or even incline the rider as if they were going up and down some hills. This sort of exercise known as “spinning” and it is an activity that uses specialized stationary bikes in an unusual way.
Is spinning for you? Usually someone who regularly rides their own traditional ten-speed bicycle at higher rates of speed as a form of exercise is a good candidate for a standard spinning class, but if you have not participated in this form of exercise in the past you should consider building up your capabilities.
While a formal spinning class will use specialized stationary bikes made for the high rates of speed and varied programs, almost anyone can use their own at-home equipment to enjoy this form of exercise. It is important to first understand how spinning works and then determine if your bike is capable of meeting such needs.
All spinning classes use a pedal rate, resistance, and varied rider positions. If you watch a class you will see that riders stand and sit when the teacher calls out the commands, and you will also notice that the riders tend to increase and decrease pedaling speeds according to the teacher’s instructions too. This also means that riders must really focus on their workout if the major benefits are to be enjoyed.
So, if you want to do your own spinning activities at home, you will have to own one of the modern stationary bikes that can be pre-programmed with a range of tensions, inclines, and pedal rates. You should also consider investing in a pre-recorded audio program that guides you through the sort of paces and speeds demanded by such a workout. Many at-home spinners also purchase special toe clips to prevent their feet from slipping off of the pedals when they reach maximum rates of speed as well.
Additionally, just like all exercise regimens not everyone will be capable of maintaining the maximum levels of energy that are required in a spinning class. Before hopping on your stationary bike and pedaling for all it is worth you should consult with a doctor and also take the time to gradually increase your capabilities.
