Elastic Exercise Bands
Deterioration of elastic in exercise clothes?
Hello Yahoo Answers Community,
I have a bunch of cycling jerseys that I kept in my wooden under-bed storage drawers. These jerseys were my older uniforms that I haven’t worn in over a year. I’ve had them for over 3 years prior with no trouble with the elastic band at the waist.
I pulled them out today and all the elastic has deteriorated. It turned a yellow-brown color and is very brittle. I can’t figure out what caused this to occur…
Any thoughts on what happened and advice for the future?
I looked into rubber deterioration and the sites suggest that it’s cause by UV rays (not here), ozone, or microorganisms. My wooden drawers wouldn’t emit ozone right? Would the fact that my drawers are unfinished wood be a factor?
Elastic is made of rubber and rubber is an organic compound which will deteriorate with age and that’s what happened to yours. It is nothing to do with your dresser or ozone. It’s just that the elastic was old and there is nothing you can do to prevent it.
