My rats don’t exercise…?
I have two rats, a male (desexed) and a female. They spend most of their day in a big cage, and i get them out for a couple of hours every night. I let them go wherever they want, but they only ever get into my jumper and fall asleep. They have no wheel in their cage. they did when they were small and neither of them ever worked it out so im not buying the big ones because they are very expensive and i know it wont be used. they climb around their cage a lot but i just worry that they never exercise! and the balls that they can run in arent an option.. too many cats and dogs in this house! plus my female is very timid and this would frighten her a lot to be so exposed. please advise!!
i have two boy rats, i also have cats so i was in the same situation as you.
if the rats are aware there are other animals in the same house then when you watch your rats or have them out the cage they will hide in you if they trust you, that’s what my timid boy those sometimes but is loads better now. they trust you if they go in your jumper and don’t run away from your hand. any way i have a big cage too, and you will probably find that they will go out but when no one at all is in the room at the same time. this is because they feel they have two be alert when someone is in the room because they are aware that there might be a predator. im sure they exercise sometimes too, and if they don’t then it will be alright any way unless you over feed them.
my rats are allowed to run around the room but i usually let them go on the sofa then they will climb on you and around you and that is exercise. they love to play so find a game you can do with them, like follow the hand and flip them about and stuff.
